Welcome to the 2024 Show!

With a little over four weeks to go to the 104th Claremorris Agricultural Show and Trade Fair on August 4th, the Bank Holiday Sunday, big plans are being put in place by the Show Committee and volunteers to ensure that this year’s event will be one of the largest and most successful in its long history, dating back to the early years of the last century. The Show embraces the modern with the traditional, providing the ideal opportunity for people of all ages to meet face to face in a friendly and welcoming environment. The Show will be held at the Claremorris Athletic Grounds (Eircode F12 KX 63) commonly known locally as the “Racecourse” or indeed the “Showgrounds”. 

OVER 275 CLASSES

The show boasts a wide variety of offerings with over 275 show classes including cattle, sheep, horses, vintage, farm and garden, cookery and dog show while the poultry classes make a welcome return after an absence for a number of years. The various showjumping competitions will be staged in the central arena throughout the day. Another exciting new feature this year will be “Music in the Marquee” throughout the afternoon while Celebrity TV Chef Adrian will again present his cookery demo. There will also be lots and lots of fun activities for children of all ages.

A LONG AND RICH HISTORY

This year marks the 120th anniversary of the staging of the very first Claremorris Agricultural Show which was held in the Hollymount area before finding its “true home” in Claremorris parish shortly afterwards. It was held for many years in what was known locally as “Dillons Field” before moving to its current location in 1960. While the show was cancelled on no less than 17 occasions for a variety of reasons including two World Wars, Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks and COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, there was always an enthusiastic band of committee members and volunteers willing and ready to nurture it back to its best as has been witnessed with two highly successful shows in 2022 and 2023. The Show Committee continue to work closely with Claremorris Athletics and Sports Club Ltd., the owners of the site, to enhance and improve the venue which is of major benefit to all on Show Day and equally benefits the wider community who use those wonderful facilities throughout the remainder of the year.

CLAREMORRIS SHOW AGM

The Show Annual General Meeting, held in early June, reviewed what was considered another hugely successful 2023 event with an attendance close to the record breaking 2022 show and the historic 100th show of 2018.

Show Chairman Tom Connolly paid tribute to all those who contributed in so many different ways. He particularly thanked main sponsors, the Corrib Oil Group, for their unique contribution which included financial, logistical, promotional and media support. He also thanked the other show officers, committee and volunteers for their enthusiasm and efforts in 2023. Mr. Connolly also led tributes to the late Owen Brennan who sadly passed away following an illness in the past year. It was recalled how Owen had made an enormous contribution as a show volunteer/committee member over many years as indeed he had with numerous other local organisations. 

Show Secretary Maureen Finnerty outlined the many aspects of planning prior to and after the 2023 show. She acknowledged the huge support received from the board and volunteers of the Irish Shows Association. 

Show Treasurer Michael McGrath outlined the financial details of what was recognised as “another hugely successful event”. He thanked all who contributed to its success including sponsors of all levels, exhibitors, performers, the local media, local and national political representatives, the many show volunteers and the general public who attended in their thousands once again.
